Bill Maher tore into intolerant leftists who cut off their family members during the holidays over politics, something that they have been urged to do by some media figures.
On the latest edition of his “Club Random” podcast, the comedian who has been an outspoken critic of the worst excesses of his own side, sat down with late-night legend Jay Leno for a pre-Christmas conversation that took a trip down memory lane.
Leno noted how Sammy Davis Jr. was once denounced as a “traitor” by the Hollywood left for hugging former President Richard M. Nixon.
Bill Maher tells Jay Leno that his least favorite part of the left is how they will cut you off from their lives if you are friends with someone from the right:
Jay Leno: “Remember him [Sammy Davis Jr] hugging Nixon? At the time he was seen as a traitor.”

“It’s so funny you mention that because, like today, we live in this time when you’re not allowed to have friends from the other side or cross lines politically,” Maher told his fellow comic.“And I forgot that there’s an example of that way back when; a guy who crossed lines politically. ‘Ooh, the worst thing you could ever do, be friends with a Republican. Ahh! Call 911.’”
“This is what I f**king hate about the left,” he stated. “And they’re not going to get me over to the Trump side, which they think they will sometimes, but just the idea that, you know, ‘cut your family off for Thanksgiving if they voted for the wrong guy.’ F**k off, you f**ks.’ And Sammy, when he hugged Nixon, he was ostracized by the left a lot. That was an early harbinger of that.”
Maher’s take comes after a recent survey by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) that found Democrats were overwhelmingly more likely to take out their political differences on family members.
“As the holidays approach … Democratic voters (23%) are nearly five times as likely as Republican voters (5%) to say they will be spending less time with certain family members because of their political views,” the organization said.
“It may be tense around the Hanukkah and Christmas table. It’s not just that we’re disagreeing about abortion or we’re disagreeing about taxes or even immigration… but we’re disagreeing about a fundamental worldview and about identity,” PRRI president Robert P. Jones told Axios.
After President-elect Donald J. Trump won the election, media personalities including MSNBC’s Joy Reid and “The View” co-hosts Sunny Hostin and Whoopi Goldberg encouraged leftists to snub seasonal family gatherings.
Sunny Hostin says people shouldn’t visit family for the holidays if they voted for Trump because “it’s a moral issue” and they voted “against people that they love.”

An old-school liberal, Maher also slammed the holiday divisiveness on his HBO show “Real Time With Bill Maher” last month.
Please do not let politics fuck up the holidays. Family isn’t like gender. You can’t fix it by cutting off members. pic.twitter.com/KyVoqrFu0f

“Can we please not let politics f**k up the holidays?” Maher said. “Half the country is moping. Half can’t stop gloating. Enough. It’s f**king Christmas and you will act like it!”
