Earlier in the year, a teaser for “Snow White” was released. It might take the cake as the most hated teaser of 2024, having nabbed 1.4 million dislikes on YouTube. I don’t believe any other movie has come close to this kind of vitriol.
Two weeks ago, the actual full-length trailer was unveiled online, and it didn’t fared any better. It’s well on its way to the million mark as it currently has 817k dislikes, and only 30k “likes.” That’s quite the ratio.
As the new year approaches, Disney must be nervous about the prospects surrounding this film which has earned the wrath of movie fans worldwide. One look through the 50,000+ comments for the trailer and you notice the cesspool of hatred being directed towards this movie. Is it justified? I’d say it’s borderline over the top.
Fans seem to be fed up with Disney remaking beloved animated classics. However, it’s more the casting of Rachel Zegler in the titular role that’s gotten the most fervent ire from the online film community. I’ve tackled all of her loony comments in previous pieces, so I won’t delve into it again, but she’s clearly not well liked by many.
It doesn’t help that we have to suspend disbelief in this latest interpretation of ‘Snow White’ and pretend that Gal Gadot’s Evil Queen is actually so jealous of Zegler’s beauty in the film that she goes as far as to poison her.
The actual budget of “Snow White” is still unknown. It’s definitely well over $250M, and might even be approaching the $350M mark, if not having already surpassed it. Reshoots were conducted on the film in June 2023. The goal was to insert flashbacks into “Snow White,” featuring actress Emilia Faucher as a younger version of the Disney princess. Another round of reshoots occurred earlier this summer in London. This was confirmed by Gadot herself.
“Snow White” was written by none other than Greta Gerwig and directed by Marc Webb (“500 Days of Summer”). It stars Zegler, Gadot, Andrew Burnap, Ansu Kabia, Dujonna Gift and Martin Klebba. Principal photography began on March 7, 2022, and wrapped in June 2022. So, next year’s release will have been almost three years since production “officially” wrapped up in London.
“Snow White” is set for release on March 21, 2025.
