Former India Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who led country’s economic reform, died Thursday. He was 92.
Singh was first Sikh in India to hold that office and served two terms. At the time of his death, Singh was being treated for age-related medical conditions, according to CNBC.com. He died after he was brought to hospital after a sudden loss of consciousness Thursday.
He is credited with leading India to unprecedented economic growth and lifting hundreds of millions of residents out of poverty.

Singh was born into a poor family in a part of British-ruled India now in Pakistan. He won won a place at Cambridge University before heading to Oxford, at which he earning a doctorate the focused on the study of role of exports and free trade in India’s economy, CNBC also reports.
