There’s prepping for certain conditions in the NFL, and then there’s this. New Orleans Saints quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko had his rookie signal-caller Spencer Rattler try to get a feel for playing in Green Bay, Wisconsin, by having him take reps in a walk-in freezer.

The Saints are taking on the Packers at Lambeau Field – the Frozen Tundra – on Monday night. There’s already snow on the ground, and my source in Green Bay tells me it’s snowing as I type this.

“This morning, (Coach) Janocko took us in the cafeteria freezer, where it was like 10 degrees, and we’re just going through the whole script in there, and so just doing that, that helped a lot,” Rattler said, according to ESPN.

“So, hopefully, it’s not 10 degrees, but we’ll be ready.” The forecast calls for a high of 32 degrees, and there’s currently a Winter Weather Advisory in effect until 6pm.

Rattler will be making his fourth start of the season tonight against the Packers, but his first since October.

Baby, It’s Cold … INSIDE

How freaking fantastic is that? The coach needs you prepped for cold hands and a cold football, so he locks you in a walk-in freezer to get acclimated to Lambeau.

Okay, maybe he didn’t lock Spencer Rattler in, but it’s a pretty funny visual.

Janocko actually claims that he lifted the idea from the John Candy movie Cool Runnings, where one of the bobsledders does a stint in the freezer of an ice cream truck to prep for conditions in Calgary.

Lucky for Rattler and the Saints, they won’t end up facing 25 degrees below zero and high winds, as the Jamaican bobsled team did.

Other Techniques To Prep For The Cold

Quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko isn’t using the walk-in freezer as his only method of preparing the team to face the Packers in the Frozen Tundra.

“I think there’s something we said about just preparing for [the cold], so you’re not shocked and it’s not something surprising,” he said. “It’s something that you deal with as far as you prepare for the opponent and prepare for the venue.”

Janocko said that the “guys thought it was hilarious,” but the “cafeteria workers think I’m out of my mind.”

Rattler was named the starter after Derrick Carr suffered a hand injury and was ruled out. Running back Alvin Kamara is also on the bench with an injury. They are 14-point underdogs tonight.

The Saints started hot this season, winning their first two games by outscoring their opponents 91-19. Things came crashing down in a hurry, however, as they reeled off a 7-game losing streak.
