NFL RedZone host Scott Hanson made a small but significant change to the network’s catchphrase, appearing to signal an end to their “commercial-free” coverage.
On Sunday, he promised there would be “seven hours of RedZone football.”
The words “commercial-free” had been eliminated.
RedZone has been around for over 16 years, and its motto at the start of every broadcast has been, “Seven hours of commercial-free football start now!”
The channel prides itself on showing “every touchdown from every game,” and is closely linked to the Fantasy Football craze. It has operated on a limited-commercial format. Until now, it seems.
NFL RedZone No Longer Commercial Free
The marked change to their slogan comes after Hanson made the “commercial free” claim last week, then watched as the NFL RedZone aired ads during the broadcast.
Viewers were startled. An NFL Media spokesperson told Sportico that the league wanted to run “test” ads from major companies such as Gatorade and Verizon.
But is it just a test?
Hanson was forced to apologize to fans for making a promise he didn’t deliver last week.
“I just wanted to take a quick second and apologize for using the ‘commercial-free’ catchphrase at the top of last show,” Hanson said in a video posted to X.
“I was conflicted about it beforehand. I had a tough decision to make, and I made the wrong decision, and I’m sorry. … Being a great host means being accurate, being truthful, and having integrity, and so I hope you consider accepting this apology.”

Is The Commercial-Free Era Over?
After Hanson dropped the phrase this week, the network didn’t actually air any ads.
So, is the commercial-free era over? Or was it a test? Hanson seems to have played it safe so as not to create a liability issue for NFL RedZone.
As for this being an official move? The network says they are “undecided.”
Test or not, fans of the network weren’t happy with the shenanigans.
“Commercials during NFL RedZone: the final death blow to Western Civilization,” one such person wrote on X.
It will be interesting to see what happens with the network going forward.
