President Joe Biden continued burning it all down as he exits the White House, commuting the sentences of essentially every federal death row inmate.

“Today, President Biden announced that he is commuting the sentences of 37 individuals on federal death row. Those individuals will have their sentences reclassified from execution to life without the possibility of parole,” the White House said in a “Fact Sheet” issued on Monday.

“I’ve dedicated my career to reducing violent crime and ensuring a fair and effective justice system,” the president said in his own statement.

Biden’s actions essentially are a preventative against the incoming second Trump administration.

“When President Biden came into office, his Administration imposed a moratorium on federal executions, and his actions today will prevent the next Administration from carrying out the execution sentences that would not be handed down under current policy and practice,” the statement continued.

The move came just weeks after Biden commuted the sentences of nearly 1,500 prisoners and pardoned 40 others. Among those issued a pardon was the president’s son, Hunter Biden.

“The President has issued more commutations at this point in his presidency than any of his recent predecessors at the same point in their first terms. Earlier this month, the President announced clemency for approximately 1,500 Americans – the most ever in a single day – who have shown successful rehabilitation and a commitment to making communities safer,” the White House stated.

Fox News reported:

The convicted murderers who will now escape execution include: Marcivicci Barnette, who killed a man in a carjacking and his ex-girlfriend; co-defendants Brandon Basham and Chadrick Fulks, who kidnapped and killed a woman after escaping prison; Anthony Battle, who killed a prison guard; Jason Brown, who stabbed a postal worker to death; Thomas Hager, who committed a drug-related killing; David Runyon, who participated in the murder-for-hire plot of a Naval officer; Thomas Sanders, who kidnapped and killed a 12-year-old girl; Rejon Taylor, who carjacked, kidnapped and killed a restaurant owner; and Alejandro Umana, who killed two brothers inside a restaurant.

Some of the inmates were sentenced to death for killing a prisoner in federal prison and others were responsible for drug-related murders and deadly bank robberies. Some of the victims of the crimes committed by the prisoners were law enforcement officers and children.

“Make no mistake: I condemn these murderers, grieve for the victims of their despicable acts, and ache for all the families who have suffered unimaginable and irreparable loss,” Biden said in his statement.

“But guided by my conscience and my experience as a public defender, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Vice President, and now President, I am more convinced than ever that we must stop the use of the death penalty at the federal level,” he added. “In good conscience, I cannot stand back and let a new administration resume executions that I halted.”
