A successful attempt to fund the federal government reportedly had the president-elect “NOT happy” after one ask was left out of the pared-down legislation.
The cycle of spending battles presented a readily predicted pre-Christmas fight this week where the 118th Congress attempted to score some pork off their wishlist. After ensuing pushback found President-elect Donald Trump and supporters decrying a new omnibus, a number of subsequent attempts saw a slimmed-down bill pass without the GOP leader’s request for a new debt ceiling date.
“Trump is NOT happy that the spending deal doesn’t include the debt ceiling, according to person who spoke with him this p.m,” reported Semafor congressional bureau chief Burgess Everett on X Friday evening. “Not clear he’ll publicly try to stop the bill in the Senate but Trump’s not thrilled the bill doesn’t contain his main ask.”

At a vote of 366-34 in the House, with 29 not voting and Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D) “present,” before clearing the Senate 85-11, the continuing resolution dubbed the American Relief Act neither included an extension of the debt ceiling nor it’s elimination, a matter on which Trump had told Fox News Digital Thursday, “Anybody that supports a bill that doesn’t take care of the Democrat quicksand known as the debt ceiling should be primaried and disposed of as quickly as possible.”
Those opposed included only Republicans, many of whom had held their ground during the 118th Congress speaker voting marathon that had delayed the short-lived reign of former California Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R) such as Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona, Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado and Rep. Keith Self of Texas.
Likewise Rep. Chip Roy of Texas and Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, who were outspoken on the tactics of the establishment in Washington, D.C., also remained opposed.
Roy, who’d taken considerable heat for standing against a debt ceiling increase that had been projected to add $5 trillion to the debt, pointed out another layer in the spending battle that had been wrought by congressional leadership with a reminder of what Trump had said earlier in the week before he’d promoted a version that pushed the Debt Ceiling fight to after the 2026 midterm election.
“If Republicans try to pass a clean Continuing Resolution without all of the Democrat ‘bells and whistles’ that will be so destructive to our Country, all it will do, after January 20th, is bring the mess of the Debt Limit into the Trump Administration, rather than allowing it to take place in the Biden Administration. Any Republican that would be so stupid as to do this should, and will, be Primaried. Everything should be done, and fully negotiated, prior to my taking Office on January 20th, 2025,” the president-elect had stated on Truth Social.
To that, the Texas lawmaker remarked, “So — are the 170 who voted yes… pro Trump or anti Trump? How about the 34 no votes? Confusion, huh?”
“Or maybe not…” he added while tagging Vice President-elect J.D. Vance, House Speaker Mike Johnson, the Freedom Caucus, Elon Musk, and Vivek Ramaswamy.

Meanwhile, Musk maintained that, while not a perfect representation, the voice of the people had had an impact on the legislative fight, having “turned a bill that weighed pounds into a bill that weighed ounces. You are the media now.”
Adding the Latin expression “Vox Populi, Vox Dei” which translates to “the voice of the people is the voice of God,” the entrepreneur reacted to the suggestion, “It’s not perfect but it’s a step in the right direction,” with “Yeah.”
Your actions turned a bill that weighed pounds into a bill that weighed ounces!
You are the media now.

Outside of the disparate positions of the GOP in the Beltway, others similarly saw victory for Trump ahead of his return to the White House after passage of “the smallest CR in history” had opted out of a Congressional pay raise, provided billions of dollars in assistance for Americans and seemingly left the door open for actionable investigations against January 6 committee members.
HISTORY: President Trump delivered a significant win as the House passed the smallest CR ever in history!
– Started as 1,547 pages, was cut to 120
– No raise for members of Congress
– No protections for J6 Committee
– Gives $20B for agricultural disaster assistance
