The Atlanta Falcons are expected to release quarterback Kirk Cousins before his $10 million roster bonus in March, according to ESPN.

Adam Schefter reports that the split between Cousins and the Falcons is “inevitable,” confirming an earlier report by OutKick’s Armando Salguero that the Falcons quarterback was likely to be released or possibly traded after the team announced earlier this week that rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. would start the remainder of the year.

FALCONS WILL START MICHAEL PENIX JR THE REST OF THE SEASON

Make no mistake about it, Cousins has been pretty awful this year, throwing 18 touchdowns while also throwing 16 interceptions as the Falcons sit at 7-7 this season.

This past offseason, the Falcons signed Cousins to a $180 million contract that included $100 million guaranteed.

Regardless, Schefter confirms OutKick’s Salguero’s initial report that no one should expect Cousins to be on the Falcons roster next season.

“Next offseason, the Falcons will likely move on from Cousins completely. They may try to trade him, although his contract and middling performance this year makes that very difficult,” Salguero wrote earlier this week. Cousins has a no-trade clause in his current contract.

As one football fan pointed out, if this is the end of Kirk Cousins, he has hoodwinked multiple teams throughout his career, as he would finish with a record of 83-74-2, 1 playoff win in 13 seasons and a total salary of $321 MILLION dollars.

Despite not having a great season, Cousins could very well still find himself on a team next year, as the Titans, Jets, Giants, Raiders and Saints may be in the market for a new quarterback.
