Accused UnitedHealthcare CEO assassin Luigi Mangione was unexpectedly hit with federal charges this week, reportedly thanks to pressure from the healthcare insurance industry.

“Sources [said] that the federal charges came amid pressure from health insurance industry leaders to make an example out of Mangione, though it was unclear which specific entities petitioned the DOJ,” according to an exclusive report from the New York Post.

“How the feds with the Southern District of New York made their decision to charge and haul Mangione to court … remained unclear, although one source [said] that it came from the top of the DOJ in Washington, DC,” the Post’s reporting continues.

This means, much to the shock of Mangione’s attorneys, that their client will be facing two separate murder charges — one from the feds, and one from New York County District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

That being said, the timing — the fed charges were announced before Bragg could even “take [Mangione] to state court,” according to veteran defense attorney Mark Bederow — has some speculating that the feds are trying to take over the operation.

“They literally filed a complaint before the DA was even able to take him to state court,” Bederow told the Post. “They have given the impression that they jumped the DA and kind of elbowed them out of the way. Anyone watching this realizes that the feds are moving in here to take over.”

Mangione’s attorneys don’t like any of this.

“Luigi Mangione’s defense attorney has expressed amazement that her client, accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, will be facing both federal and state murder charges,” according to Newsweek.

“Karen Friedman Agnifilo also suggested that there may be collusion between state and federal prosecutors and that she will be seeking extra disclosure in the case. She told the court that in over 30 years working in criminal law in New York, she had never seen a case handled in this way,” Newsweek’s reporting continues.

“I would like to follow up on what the government just said and seek clarity on exactly what it is that is happening, because this is a highly unusual situation we find ourselves in,” she told the court. “Yesterday there was a press conference held by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office that was announcing these murder in furtherance of terrorism charges, and there was absolutely no mention that Mr. Mangione was going to be charged federally.”

“In fact, I don’t think they even knew that this was going to happen. We were entirely prepared to come to court today for an arraignment. In fact, I was told by the Supreme Court in New York County that it was going to be at 2 p.m. today in New York County in front of Judge Carro. Again, we were entirely prepared to go there and be arraigned on that indictment,” she added.

The good news for those who desire to see Mangione face justice for brutally murdering a father of two is that “only the feds can put the death penalty on the table” since New York State has no death penalty, according to the Post.

“They have the ultimate leverage,” Bederow said of the feds’ power.
