After 28 years, Fox News anchor Neil Cavuto signed off for the final time on Thursday.

Having joined Fox News at its founding, Cavuto announced his departing as he closed out his show ahead of the Christmas holiday break, suggesting this was a “good time” to leave — the Fox News host has been a frequent critic of President-elect Donald J. Trump, who will retake the White House in 30 days.

“This is it. The final segment, but today I also wanted to let you know this is my final show. I’m leaving Fox,” Cavuto announced. “I’ve been planning this day for some time. This just seemed like a good time. Now, some of you might be thinking, ‘Well, Neil, it’s about time!’ After all, I’ve been doing this for nearly three decades here. You know, there are people working with me now who weren’t even born when I started at Fox — that’s how old I am. But I’m not leaving journalism, I’m just leaving here.”

Cavuto, 66, who battled serious health problems over the years, including open heart surgery, concluded his farewell message with a positive message of unity.

“My Irish mom used to say, ‘We should count our blessings and never forget who blessed us.’ In the end, that should be our focus and that is mine tonight,” he said. “Not all the stuff that divides us or the nastiness that it emitters us, but the far more important stuff that unites us and defines us and lifts us. I tried to appeal to those better angels and I’m grateful you gave me that chance.

“That is why I say goodbye with only good thoughts and good wishes. I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful holiday season. May the new year be as fulfilling for you as these nearly 30 incredible years you blessed me. It means a lot, you do too, thank you, and good night.”

Trump had a somewhat positive message himself, suggesting in a Truth Social that it was “good news” that Cavuto was finally leaving: “GOOD NEWS FOR AMERICA! Neil Cavuto, the Lowest Rated Anchor on Fox, by far, is leaving – Should have happened a long time ago!”

Fox News reportedly offered to renew Cavuto’s expiring contract and his presumed decision to reject the deal prompted chatter about the network asking him to take a pay cut, according to Mediaite.

Colleagues who worked with Cavuto at Fox News offered their best wishes — here are but a few:

On the other hand, MAGA was down with Cavuto’s exit and couldn’t celebrate hard enough:
