California has declared a state of emergency over the H5N1 Bird Flu, harkening back to the COVID pandemic.

The emergency was declared amid concerns that cases of the virus could spike and increase the spread, as an outbreak among cattle has resulted in the infection of dairy workers. One person has been hospitalized with the virus in Louisiana which marks the first severe case in the United States.

The emergency declaration will give California the ability to disperse funds to fight the virus’s spread, including the money for contracts to obtain things like tests, PPE, and staff.

California has officially identified over 645 dairy herds that have presented with the virus since August, but nearly half of those have come within the last month. This rapid rise in cases has sparked panic, leading to Governor Gavin Newsom’s declaration.

X users reacted to the move, and many are reminded that the COVID state of emergency was not lifted until 2023, three years after the virus began spreading in the United States.
