Travis Kelce’s recent performance in Cleveland felt like the closing of a book. At least, that’s according to the legendary tight end himself.
The Kansas City Chiefs star, who has been nothing short of a Hall of Fame player on the field, spoke candidly on his “New Heights” podcast about the surreal feeling of playing in his native Ohio.
Kelce suggests that Sunday’s game might have been his “last hoorah” in Cleveland.
“It felt so surreal. I don’t know if it’s the last time I’ll play in Cleveland but it kinda felt like I was giving it one last hoorah before I’m done because I’ve only played there twice in 12 years,” he said. “It was a special day for me personally.”
Travis Kelce Retiring?
The “last hoorah” comments can undoubtedly be taken as an indication that Kelce is thinking about retiring. When, however, is another matter.
Is it at the end of this season? Maybe, maybe not. It could also just be a reference to the fact that Kansas City doesn’t travel to Cleveland very often, and he only has so much time to play in peak physical condition.
The Chiefs last traveled to Cleveland in 2018. Kelce isn’t about to go another six seasons in the NFL.
In September, during an appearance with “The Rich Eisen Show,” Kelce gave no indication that he was ready to call it a career on the gridiron.
“I’m still enjoying coming to work…I’m not dreading practice,” Kelce said at the time. “I’m just having so much fun and just so appreciative and so fortunate that I’ve been able to come into year 12 and still have this energy and this love and the ability to get to work.”
Is He Still Having Fun?
It’s hard to argue that Kelce isn’t having as much fun as he was when he first commented on retiring. Fans ripped the three-time Super Bowl champion and owner of the worst haircut in the NFL when he refused to shake hands with players from the Las Vegas Raiders after his Chiefs narrowly escaped with a victory.
Despite having seven receptions for 68 yards in that game, Kelce’s performance was lackluster, and he missed a chance to become the Chiefs’ all-time leading scorer. He needed just one touchdown.
Kelce has yet to get that score.
In his last two games, Kelce has tallied nine catches for 72 yards but zero touchdowns. He only has a total of two visits to the endzone, and his average yards per catch are downright dreadful.
The Chiefs are 13-1 on the season, but have had numerous fortunate bounces and calls go their way, with 10 of those wins coming by one score or less.
