What may have started as a joke appears to be turning into a serious consideration for President-elect Donald Trump.
Early Wednesday morning, Trump took to Truth Social to ask why the United States provides financial assistance to Canada “to the tune of over $100,000,000 a year.”
Look:
“No one can answer why we subsidize Canada to the tune of over $100,000,000 a year? Makes no sense! Many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st State. They would save massively on taxes and military protection. I think it is a great idea. 51st State!!!” he wrote.
This comes after rumors that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau may resign amid a discussion over tariffs, which Trump proposed during his presidential campaign. As BizPac Review previously reported, sources claimed Trudeau was considering “prorogation (ending the session of Parliament) or resignation” sometime Monday afternoon, but that never occurred. Instead, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned and was promptly replaced with Dominic LeBlanc who currently also works as minister of intergovernmental affairs.

It remains to be seen if Trudeau will still resign, or if he plans to continue negotiating with Trump in an attempt to avoid tariffs.
Meanwhile, X discussed the idea of bringing Canada into the United States:
What would be the Electoral College strength and Congressional representation of Canada as the 51st state?

It is a very interesting proposal here. As a Canadian I would have to really consider it.
1. 51st state? Canada would have to be divided because Quebec would need to be its own entity;
2. Taxes: definitely lower +
3. Money is on par +
4. Wintering somewhere hot and not lose 40%…— Doug (@b3046a11d9bf47f) December 18, 2024
This is the final straw for Trudeau who is already dangling by a thread.
Even before assuming office, Trump is so powerful that he’s taking out the PM of Canada with a couple of tweets

Do you think this is a serious idea, or just Trump’s way of saying the U.S. and Canada should work more closely?

You know, Canada has ten provinces. So, instead of one state, we could actually get 10 out of the deal.
-Ontario
-Quebec
-British Colombia
-Alberta
-Manitoba
-Newfoundland and Labrador
-Price Edward Island
-Nova Scotia
-New Brunswick— Celeste (@radiantamethyst) December 18, 2024
As a Canadian, I can tell you that people here are starting to freak out.
The trolling tactics are working. Our Finance minister just recently resigned because she couldn’t handle the 25% tariff slap.. I absolutely love it.
Let’s hope Trudeau resigns next.

Do you think he is serious…?

Isn’t it mostly liberal up there? How would that be a benefit to the US?
