Many have been shocked by expressions of approval for Luigi Mangione’s murder of Brian Thompson on social media, in a few instances by journalists and other relatively prominent Democrats. But it turns out that those seeming outliers were speaking for many Americans.

An Emerson College poll finds that Mangione’s murder is broadly supported by young people:

A poll found 41 percent of adults under 30 consider the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson acceptable, more than the 40 percent in that demographic who consider it unacceptable.

The survey from Emerson College Polling found 68 percent of all respondents found the actions of the person who shot and killed Thompson unacceptable.

But a startling 24 percent of those aged 18-29 found it “somewhat acceptable,” and 17 percent of that group found it completely acceptable.

As you would expect, Democrats are most likely to condone cold-blooded murder.

22 percent of Democrats said they found the killing acceptable, compared to 16 percent of independents and 12 percent of Republicans.

The Democrats have always been the party of violence.

Complete poll results are here.

What can we make of these appalling findings? Presumably the 41% who say that cold-blooded murder is A-OK don’t go to church. So they rely for moral instruction on the public schools, which border on complete uselessness, and their parents, assuming they have parents. And on the popular culture, which can fairly be described as depraved.

What we are seeing here is a culture in steep decline. Donald Trump never set out to be a moral leader or exemplar, but maybe he can play a role in restoring sanity to our public discourse.
