Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will aim to address any skepticism about his confirmation as he begins meetings with Senate Republicans this week regarding his nomination to head the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
Kennedy is one of the most high-profile figures nominated by Trump for his Cabinet, joining other notable nominees such as Pete Hegseth for Defense Secretary and former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (Hawaii) for a key intelligence role, both of which have sparked significant debate, The Hill reported on Sunday.
Former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), Trump’s original nominee for attorney general, withdrew from consideration due to discontent within the GOP.
Although RFK Jr. was initially seen as one of the most controversial picks, there has been little public criticism from Senate Republicans. GOP sources believe he is in a strong position and faces a smoother path to confirmation compared to Hegseth and Gabbard.
“He’s in a good spot. You haven’t really heard much consternation about his nomination at all in recent weeks,” one Senate GOP aide told The Hill.
The aide added that GOP senators expect that Kennedy will focus on “Make America Health Again” issues and that he no longer supports liberal abortion policies.
“If that turns out to be true, I think he’ll be on a glide path to being confirmed,” the aide said.
Kennedy’s scheduled meetings include one with GOP health staff on the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, according to a source familiar with the matter. This meeting is a standard step before his meeting with the committee’s incoming chair, Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.), who is a physician.
Cassidy, one of three GOP senators who voted to convict Trump on an impeachment charge, has been largely silent about Kennedy when asked, stating only that he wishes to allow the confirmation process to unfold naturally. When Kennedy was nominated, Cassidy, in a statement, noted he “has championed issues like healthy foods and the need for greater transparency in our public health infrastructure.”
Kennedy argues the rise of chronic diseases in America can be traced to ultra-processed foods, environmental toxins and chemical additives. He has pushed for a ban on fluoridated water and increased access to raw milk.
Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) stated that he wants to discuss genetically modified foods with Kennedy, as it is a crucial issue for farmers.
Kennedy Jr., whose family name was near royalty in Democratic circles since the tumultuous 1960s and who left the party in disillusionment over the summer and ran for the presidential nomination as an Independent, is increasingly focused on improving the health of American children, especially through the foods they eat.
“We have a generation of kids who are swimming around in a toxic soup right now,” Kennedy previously told Fox News. “We’re letting these industries corrupt our agencies and mass poison them.”
Dr. Marc Siegel, the senior medical analyst for Fox News, appeared on Fox & Friends last month to discuss the HHS Secretary nominee’s plans to address the prevalence of ultra-processed foods comprising 73% of the U.S. food supply. He said one of the biggest dangers in processed foods is dyes.
“Food coloring is a problem,” he said. “Red Dye No. 3 has been banned in Europe. They’re banning it in California. It’s been associated with cancer in animals.” He also said studies have linked food dyes to hyperactivity in kids.
Siegel noted that Democrats and Republicans have advocated banning certain food dyes, but these efforts have faced strong resistance from the food industry and its lobbyists.
“There’s a concern here that if this ends up with more regulations, that will drive prices up—and food grocery store prices are already a problem,” Siegel added, noting that he agreed with RFK Jr.’s concerns about ultra-processed foods harming children.
Some of the most harmful additives include MSG and high-fructose corn syrup, which directly contribute to obesity, Siegel said.
