President Biden set a record this past Thursday. He commuted the sentences of 1,499 convicts and pardoned 39 more. The White House has posted Biden’s brief statement in support of his exercise of the pardon power here. There is more to come (“I will take more steps in the weeks ahead”).
According to this Politico story flagged by Rick Moran, Biden did not consider the specifics of one of the most egregious cases — that of the “kids for cash” judge. This story must apply to the other cases in which Biden has intervened.
In reporting Biden’s nonfeasance Politico refers to “the White House.” We shouldn’t assume that Biden is capable of “considering” anything. However, someone considered something. We are unsure who and what.
The Washington Free Beacon’s Chuck Ross and Joe Simonson highlight “Drug Lords, Ponzi Schemers, and Corrupt Officials” among Biden’s clemency recipients. NR’s Jim Geraghty also seeks to display the big picture in “Meet the Monsters Released by Joe Biden” (including “Biden’s monstrous pardons”). The Federalist’s Brianna Lyman does not want it to be overlooked that “Biden Quietly Commuted Sentences Of Chinese Spies” a few weeks ago.
What is going on here? Among the possibilities:
Like Milton’s Satan, Biden is a nihilistic figure of demonic destruction. Himself is hell.
Biden wants to set a record. He has set the record in jailbreaks just for the hell of it.
Biden wants to set the pardon of Hunter Biden inside a larger controversy.
Biden wants to expose the flaws of misguided mercy.
Biden wants to inspire an amendment repealing the president’s pardon power.
Speculating about motives is probably a fool’s errand. The New York Post confines itself to description: “Joe Biden & Co. are doing as much damage to the US as they can before they leave.” You be the judge.
