The White House said in a press call that the public has had a “slight overreaction” to a myriad of supposed drone sightings across the East Coast.

A senior administration official from the FBI remarked that many of the drone sightings are likely manned aircraft.

They “determined all large fixed-wing reported sightings have been manned aircraft.” The FBI official said they established a national tip line and have received around 5,000 tips. Of those tips, however, “less than 100 leads have been generated and deemed worthy of further investigative activity.”

The official noted that sightings near the LaGuardia, JFK and Newark airports have matched the approach patterns for flights coming into those airports. “This modeling is indicative of manned aviation being quite often mistaken for unmanned aviation or UAS,” he said.

However, the official added, there has been “without a doubt” drone sightings in the state of New Jersey, which has been a focus of a majority of drone sightings in the Northeast. “There’s no doubt many of them are owned and operated here within the state.”

A Department of Homeland Security official said “no threat has been identified from the drone sightings.”

But the White House’s investigation continues. The public has been concerned that the drones could be of a foreign source, potentially giving the United States’s adversaries intelligence.

Several officials noted that there has been no evidence or intelligence that indicates that the drones are of foreign origin. However, a Joint Chiefs official confirmed there have been drone sightings near military installations Naval Weapons Station Earle and Picatinny Arsenal. The official said it was not a new problem, but they could not identify the drones or their operators.

They added that the action of flying them over the installations is “irresponsible.”

One of the politicians that pointed out their own drone sightings in a video on social media, Sen.-elect Andy Kim (D-NJ), said on Saturday that they also believed most of the sightings were planes.

“After going out with police to observe reports of possible drones, I was with the help of civilian pilots and others able to do deeper analysis and concluded that most of the possible drone sightings that were pointed out to me were almost certainly planes,” he said.

The states of New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and other areas have been enveloped in drone sightings that have lawmakers searching for answers. Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) called on Congress to pass the Counter-UAS Authority Security, Safety, and Reauthorization Act after drones caused an airport in New York state to delay takeoffs for an hour.

Hochul, along with legislators on both sides of the aisle, are hoping the legislation will help the Northeast deal with their drone problem.
