Greta Gerwig, the director behind last year’s unexpected hit “Barbie,” is set to bring a controversial “rock and roll” twist to C.S. Lewis’s beloved “Chronicles of Narnia” series, raising eyebrows among fans and industry insiders alike. Producer Amy Pascal revealed in a recent Deadline interview that filming for this “very new take on Narnia” will commence in July 2025. The announcement has left many questioning how Gerwig’s vision will align with the Christian symbolism and epic good-versus-evil narrative that define Lewis’s works.
“It could mean literally anything when it comes to Gerwig’s incredibly unique directorial vision,” said one skeptical industry analyst, who wished to remain anonymous. “She often pushes for an IMAX release of her movies, because she is dissatisfied with the idea of letting her adaptations go straight to streaming,” noted a source close to the production.
Rumors suggest Gerwig may adapt “The Magician’s Nephew,” a prequel to the C.S. Lewis series, potentially starring her frequent collaborator Saoirse Ronan. This choice would allow Gerwig significant creative freedom, but it also risks alienating purists.
Some have even taken to calling for the C.S. Lewis estate to put a top to Gerwig’s project.
While Gerwig’s track record includes critically acclaimed films like “Little Women,” her treatment of source material has been divisive. Her “Barbie” film, while commercially successful, was criticized by some for its perceived mockery of the doll’s traditional image. Can we expect her ‘Chronicles of Narnia’ remake to treat the source material any differently?
As Hollywood watches Gerwig’s career, only time will tell if a “rock and roll” Narnia will resonate with audiences or strike a discordant note with fans of the classic fantasy series.
