The suspect who allegedly killed Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, has retained a high-powered New York attorney to represent him.
The lawyer representing Mangione is Karen Friedman Agnifilo. She used to be a chief assistant district attorney in the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and a CNN legal analyst, according to Fox News.
“Ms. Friedman Agnifilo is a longtime veteran of the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and served as the second-in-command for seven years under DA Cyrus Vance, in addition to serving for four years as the Chief of the Office’s Trial Division,” a statement from Friedman Agnifilo’s spokesperson reads.
Manhattan prosecutors charged Luigi Mangione with murder earlier this week, along with other charges.
Mangione, who was identified as a person of interest in the investigation earlier Monday, has been formally charged with one count of murder, two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, one count of second-degree possession of a forged document, and one count of third-degree criminal possession of a firearm, according to CNN.
The charges come after he made his first court appearance during a preliminary arraignment in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. He has not entered a formal plea, and has been ordered to be held without bail.
In more news about the case, the FBI had contacted Mangione’s mother the night before he was arrested, according to the New York Post. They had received a tip from San Francisco police about a missing person’s report filed by the family in November, and thought he resembled the suspect in the CEO murder case.
