Meghan Markle and Prince Harry probably aren’t pleased to hear reports that their $100 million Netflix deal may be in jeopardy after their first project failed to take off.

Meghan And Harry’s Polo Docuseries Flops

U.K. brand and culture expert Nick Ede is warning Meghan and Harry that they may lose their Netflix deal after their new five-part docuseries Polo bombed with critics. Meghan and Harry executive produced the series, which dropped this week.

Polo follows the lead-up to the polo World Cup in Florida. Meghan and Harry aren’t heavily featured in Polo. Harry is only seen a handful of times across five episodes, and Meghan appears even less. Instead, it focuses on players like Adolfo and Poroto Cambiaso, Timmy Dutta, and Nacho Figueras.

It seems like a strange choice for a couple who is trying to ingratiate themselves in the world of popular culture. Polo doesn’t exactly scream “popular”. What is screams is “out of touch.”

Ahead of Polo’s release, Meghan and Harry had promised that it would showcase the “true depth and spirit of the sport.” They also said that it would show the “intensity of its high-stakes moments.” Unfortunately for them, however, critics have widely panned Polo. That’s why Ede believes it could be the “nail in the coffin” for Meghan and Harry at Netflix.

Meghan And Harry In Trouble

Ede told Daily Mail, “The new polo documentary hasn’t received good reviews, and this is another foray into producing from Meghan and Harry.”

“All eyes will be on whether the show rates and makes the very important top ten,” he continued. “It could, like the Invictus documentary, start well due to the public’s fascination with the pair and with polo potentially.”

“But it’s more than likely to fair badly when up against blockbusters like Black Dove and safe Lindsay Lohan Christmas films,” Ede added. “This could potentially be a nail in the coffin for their deal with the streaming giant who now use algorithms to make sure their programming is perfect for their subscribers.”

Polo has been nicknamed “the Nacho show” because its star is the Argentinian player Nacho Figueras. Ede believes that this was yet another mistake on Meghan and Harry’s parts.

“With very little airtime, we don’t get to see the pair much and also hardly any PR around the series, this looks like it’s Oh No! Rather than Polo!” he lamented.

In the end, Ede believes that Meghan and Harry likely only have one more shot to impress Netflix before they lose this deal.

“We are still waiting for the new food show from Meghan and with the hype around this new show simmering rather than boiling, TV bosses will be starting to get worried about their big investment,” he concluded.

Critics Roast Polo

This comes after critics roasted Polo, giving it two stars or less out of five across the board. Indeed, the docuseries has been branded “a tedious inside-look at posh polo.” It was also described as a “mostly boring look at a sport that very few people outside of elite circles have any particular interest in.”

Meghan and Harry signed their massive deal with Netflix back in 2020. At the time, they had just stepped down as senior royals and moved across the world to Southern California, where Meghan is from.

It can’t be denied that Netflix made a huge mistake in making this deal with Meghan and Harry. However, Netflix should have known that going in. After all, Harry is a royal who has no experience in entertainment.

As for Meghan, prior to her marriage, she spent years trying to make it as an actress. While she was finally cast on the cable drama Suits, acting in a show is a far cry from producing quality content for a streaming service.

In the end, it seems that Meghan and Harry’s Netflix deal could be dead in the water. For Netflix’s sake, we hope that they can get out of this deal as soon as possible!
