I have been vaguely following the New Jersey drone story–aware of it in the way that one is aware of something that keeps popping up on X without having done a deep dive into it.

But the more I see, the weirder it is and the more worrisome.

For those who haven’t followed the story, the simple version is this: since November, a large number of very big drones–car or bus-sized, we are told–have been flying around near sensitive areas that could possibly be targets of a terrorist attack.

Everybody who is asked about the drones claims to know nothing about them–not even a hint that they are doing something classified for the government, as one would naturally assume.

Yet the same public officials who claim ignorance–and who may be ignorant–also assure us that they have no reason to believe they pose any threat.

The whole story is weird. Like REALLY weird. The drone flights are not exactly hidden–the drones go up at night, are lit up, and hence not covert–and they are nothing like the regular consumer drones you and I know. My father flies a drone regularly to photograph and his is required to have a GPS on it to ensure he doesn’t violate protected airspace, yet apparently, these do not.

There are plenty of videos floating around of these drones, and public interest is quite high. Briefings for public officials have been made, but nobody is actually being told anything of use.

It cannot simultaneously be true that government officials know nothing about these drones AND that we can be confident that there is no danger associated with them. If they were small DJI drones, they would likely pose no danger, but if they were DJI drones, we would know who owns them and where they originate from, and there would be no mystery to begin with.

So…there is almost certainly a lot of lying going on here and not the benign sort of “we are experimenting with a classified system” kind of lying. The drones wouldn’t be so easily observed if they were classified military drones, and they wouldn’t be being tested in New Jersey–a state in which not one country could be considered “rural.”

Of course, when you think of terrorism, you also don’t think of New Jersey, not because there is no high-value target there, but because it seems like there would be more spectacular places to hit if all you wanted to do was make a splash in the news.

It’s difficult to conclude that after weeks of interest in the story–at first locally among some very high-profile people who live in New Jersey and now nationally–that government officials genuinely are ignorant of what is going on. We are talking about airspace adjacent to the highest concentration of potential terrorist targets in the world–New York City.

So what are they hiding? I can’t intelligently speculate about that. Is there a manhunt or worries about a potential weapon being hidden in New Jersey, and the government doesn’t want to spark a panic?

The most benign explanation for these drones remaining a mystery is that our government is grossly incompetent and merely unable to defend America. That is the best-case scenario. If not, then the government is lying about something that cannot be something other than a VERY BAD THING. Why else would they lie?

So…either they are stunningly incompetent or they are hiding something even worse than their inability to defend crowded airspace in America.

Stay tuned.
