Confirmation concerning the member of Congress responsible for media leaks on former Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz’s (R) investigation further proved the Democratic Party “is in an ethical and political free fall.”
Thursday, the House Committee on Ethics held a meeting where the investigation of Gaetz was discussed with a notable absence. According to a report from The Hill, while it wasn’t revealed if she had “voluntarily skipped… or was asked not to attend,” ranking member Pennsylvania Rep. Susan Wild (R) was responsible for the leaks.
“It remains unclear if Wild voluntarily skipped the Thursday gathering or was asked not to attend, what information she leaked and to whom, and how the panel tracked her back as being the leaker,” the report detailed. “Two sources said Wild ultimately acknowledged to the panel that she had leaked information.”
Having lost her re-election bid to Pennsylvania state Rep. Ryan Mackenzie (R) to serve the commonwealth’s 7th congressional district encompassing Carbon, Lehigh, and Northampton Counties as well as parts of Monroe County, her chief of staff, Jed Ober, offered a statement to The Hill on the matter of Gaetz’s report.
“Rep. Wild was frustrated by the manner in which the report was handled and didn’t feel it was fruitful to participate in any further meetings on its ‘potential’ release,” he contended. “Characterizing it as anything more is inaccurate. There will be no further statements.”
In an op-ed for the New York Post, George Washington Law School Professor Jonathan Turley quoted the congresswoman’s own words from a commencement speech delivered at his school two years prior where she had said, “You must be wary of those seeking to use their influence and their expertise to wrongful ends.”
“This week, the words took on a new meaning after Wild was accused of leaking information from the House Ethics Committee,” wrote Turley. “Wild embodies a party that is in an ethical and political free fall.”
Making note of President Joe Biden’s blanket pardon of his son, Hunter Biden, as “one of the most unethical and abusive uses of presidential pardon power in history” after detailing Wild’s oath to not disclose information of the committee unless authorized to do so according to the rules, the professor argued, “It is very simple. Whatever Democrats are attempting cannot be ‘wrongful ends.’ More importantly, it is the ends, not the means, that are the measure of ethics.”
He went on to suggest, “Ironically, the collapse of the party’s credibility with the public has left little to show beyond a litany of unethical means used to achieve unrealized ends.”
While it was unclear if Wild would attend any further meetings of the committee on Gaetz before her term expired, the future for the former Florida representative, who withdrew his name from consideration to serve as President-elect Donald Trump’s attorney general over the investigation into alleged sexual misconduct, was announced Tuesday.
He was slated to begin hosting his own hour-long program on the One America News Network beginning in January titled, “The Matt Gaetz Show.”
