Every year, the IronBridge Road Walmart in Chesterfield, Virginia, hosts its “Shop with a Cop” event, where uniformed police officers help children pick out toys.
Just look at these wonderful pictures:
The first thing I think of here is just how nice it is of the officers to do this for the kids. You know, a normal thought process.
But do you know what the first thing Hector D. Velazquez Maldonado thought when he saw all these cops in the store?
Take a look at the guy before you make your guess:
Yup, he was thinking…
This would be a perfect time to shoplift!
And it totally wasn’t!
Here’s what police had to say:
‘A member of the staff at Walmart came up to us and informed us they had a shoplifting in progress,’ Chesterfield County Police Lt. James Lamb said. ‘Between the sheriff’s department and police officers, we had about 50 uniformed personnel at the store.’
Little tip here for all you shoplifters: If there are 50 police INSIDE THE WALMART you probably don’t want to shoplift.
Security footage showed the man actively shoplifting while the police worked with the kids.
And then the officers took a break from their holiday festivities to begin searching for the suspect.
‘As we approached from different directions, he tried to escape out the back of the store where he was apprehended,’ Lamb said. ‘I think he was stunned.’
More like shocked and awed.
How many cops do you need to arrest a shoplifter?
‘We had 30-40 marked patrol cars in the parking lot,’ Lamb said. ‘When we found his vehicle, it was facing where our cars were parked, so he would have had to see them. It seems like it just didn’t matter to him.’
Lamb, who already had an arrest warrant out for failing to appear in court, was arrested and charged with felony grand larceny, as he had over $1,400 worth of Walmart goods on him.
