Canadians are famous for being excessively polite. 

Not in the British way, where the snobbish Brit praises you lavishly and insincerely as he guts you with an actual or rhetorical knife. No, the Canadian version of politeness we all know and love is that of the beta who wants to be well-liked while not getting too much attention.

For all his faults, Justin Trudeau has never suffered from being excessively shy or ostentatiously polite. Unlike the stereotypical Canadian, he is a showboating narcissist who appears to believe that he stands above all in virtue. 

I’m pretty sure I would be annoyed if Trump trolled the excessively polite Canadian–it would seem to be too much like punching down. A bit unfair. And I like most Canadians, even though they have a chip on their shoulder about their proximity to the far superior United States. 

But trolling Justin Trudeau? I’m here for it!

Trump’s latest troll comes in the wake of the effeminate Cuban’s threats to retaliate for any tariffs Trump places on Canadian goods. Bragging in this way is a poor negotiating tactic for the simple reason that, while Canadian tariffs might sting a bit in the US, US tariffs will absolutely cream the Canadian economy. It’s a pretty empty threat and Trudeau should know that.

But Trudeau’s ego is as large as his testosterone levels are low, so to compensate, he talks big, insults Trump, and gets blowback that he richly deserves. 

Fidelito should have expected more than a little after he primped and preened before the Halifax Chamber of Commerce, taking swipes at Trump.

If Trudeau were smart, he would look to Macron’s approach to Trump and learn a lesson or two. Trump’s big weakness in negotiations is his susceptibility to flattery, not any fear of being insulted or disliked.

Trump likes to win, and one of the ways he likes to win is to have his opponents acknowledge him as the victor. And, as much as Trump doesn’t mind being hated, he also loves to be loved. 

But Trudeau is not smart, at least in the ways that matter. He has picked a fight with a tougher opponent than he can imagine, and this time around he won’t be part of a gang of world leaders determined to put Trump in his place. 

European leaders will, for the most part, get in line because they can’t afford not to. 

Of course, Trudeau really can’t afford to not get in line either, but he doesn’t seem to realize that yet. And until he does, Trump will continue to humiliate him.
