An attorney for UnitedHealthcare shooting suspect Luigi Mangione on Tuesday said his client will plead not guilty to the charges filed in Pennsylvania.
Defense attorney Tom Dickey is representing Mangione in Pennsylvania as he fights extradition to New York City. Mangione was arrested on Monday for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, who was shot in Manhattan last week.
“We’ve pled not guilty, at least to the charges in Pennsylvania. Like I said I’m not aware of any actual charges in New York,” Dickey told reporters, according to CNN. “I’m telling you as his lawyer, he didn’t have any … representation until I got involved this afternoon. And I’m telling you he’s pleading not guilty.”
Dickey said the judge overseeing the case should have also set bail for his client, even if that bail was $5 million. Mangione who is 26-years-old, comes from a prominent Maryland family.
The comments come after Mangione appeared in court for an extradition hearing on Tuesday morning.
Blair County District Attorney Peter Weeks said during the hearing that when Pennsylvania police apprehended Mangione on Monday, the suspect allegedly had a laptop and a backpack containing a firearm and silencer, $8,000 in U.S. currency, $2,000 in foreign currency, a passport and a fake ID, per Fox News.
Weeks also claimed he was working with New York officials to get Mangione extradited to the Empire state. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said she will sign a governor’s warrant to aid get Mangione extradited.
“I am coordinating with the District Attorney’s Office and will sign a request for a governor’s warrant to ensure this individual is tried and held accountable,” she said. “Public safety is my top priority and I’ll do everything in my power to keep the streets of New York safe.”
The White House on Tuesday has also condemned Thompson’s killing, stating that “violence to combat any sort of corporate greed is unacceptable.”
