President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday night nominated his former U.S. ambassador to El Salvador Ronald Johnson to be the new ambassador to Mexico for his next administration.

Trump said Johnson, who is different from the GOP senator from Wisconsin who bears the same name, will work alongside Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who he tapped for Secretary of State. Johnson also spent 20 years in the CIA and served as a Green Beret in the Army.

“I am pleased to nominate Ronald (Ron) Johnson to serve as the United States Ambassador to Mexico,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social. “Ron will work closely with our great Secretary of State Nominee, Marco Rubio, to promote our Nation’s security and prosperity through strong America First Foreign Policies.”

The nomination is a crucial one for the incoming administration, because of Mexico’s relationship with the United States. Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on Mexico if it does not help curb the flow of fentanyl into the U.S. or help stop illegal immigration.

“Congratulations Ron. Together, we will put an end to migrant crime, stop the illegal flow of Fentanyl and other dangerous drugs into our Country and, MAKE AMERICA SAFE AGAIN,” Trump said.

Trump nominated Kimberly Guilfoyle for U.S. Ambassador to Greece earlier Tuesday.
