Little more than five days after the targeted attack on Thompson outside the New York Midtown Hilton Hotel, a person of interest was taken into custody Monday morning. The aid of apathetic Internet sleuths proved unnecessary as reports indicated a tipster believed an individual at an Altoona, Pennsylvania McDonald’s matched the images released by the New York Police Department.
The Associated Press detailed per a law enforcement official, “The man is being held in the area of Altoona, Pennsylvania, about 233 (375 kilometers) west of New York City, the official said. The official was not authorized to discuss details of the ongoing investigation and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.”
In addition to a fake ID believed to match one used in obtaining accommodations at a hostel in the city, the New York Post reported that authorities had confirmed the person of interest was in possession of items “consistent” with what they were looking for, including a gun, silencer and additional false forms of identification.
The person of interest has been identified as 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, from Maryland:

As news broke of the person of interest in custody, the NYPD cordoned off portions of Central Park near the lake where divers were actively searching the waters. In the wake of Wednesday’s murder, NYPD Chief Detective Joseph Kenny detailed how their suspect had been tracked from the scene heading through the park on a bicycle before taking a cab uptown to a Port Authority Bus Terminal where it was believed he had left the city.
The park was also where a bag matching the one seen in surveillance footage had been discovered in the brush before being sent to a forensic lab for testing.
While it was expected that Mangione would be extradited back to New York as part of the investigation, a motive in the murder of Thompson remained unspecified.
That said, NBC News reported that the CEO’s widow Paulette Thompson noted the family had received threats prior to her husband’s murder, “There had been some threats.”
“Basically, I don’t know, a lack of coverage? I don’t know details. I just know that he said there were some people that had been threatening him,” she said.
As had been covered, shell casings recovered at the scene of Thompson’s murder had the words “deny,” “depose” and “defend” written on them, and ghoulish commentary had celebrated the demise of the husband and father over dissatisfaction with the current state of the health insurance industry.
