The chairman of the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Emergency Management and Technology Anthony D’Esposito on Tuesday slammed the Biden administration for placing U.S. law enforcement officers at heightened risk.
D’Esposito said one such example of the heightened risk is in New York City, where members of the Venezuelan gang called “Tren de Aragua” (TdA) attacked officers in the New York Police Department (NYPD).
The chairman said the gang engages in drug and human trafficking, migrant smuggling, and extortion, and operates in U.S. cities in Colorado, Texas, and New York.
“Earlier this year, two New York City police officers were assaulted by a migrant shelter near Times Square. One police officer was repeatedly kicked in the head while both of them were surrounded by 13 other people,” D’Esposito said in his opening statement. “Shortly after, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg released the suspects without bail. A sickening move that was even criticized by Governor Kathy Hochul.”
The chairman also claimed that attacks on U.S. law enforcement reached a 10-year high last year, and that U.S. officers are overwhelmed by the influx from the Biden administration’s open border policies.
“Instead of supporting suspected criminals and endangering our Nation’s police officers, we should be securing the Southwest Border, enforcing our Nation’s laws, and making our police officers’ job easier, not more difficult,” he said.
D’Esposito added that the gang has now gained a “foothold” in the United States because of the Biden administration and sanctuary cities within the country.
“As Members of this committee, we need to prioritize the safety of those who put their lives on the line for ours,” he said. “As a retired NYPD detective, I will always have our police officers’ back.”
