Former Marine Daniel Penny has been found not guilty of criminally negligent homicide in a New York courtroom today.

The not guilty verdict came after the jurors began their second round of deliberations.

The 12 jurors were deadlocked for on the more serious charge of manslaughter, which was then dropped by the prosecution last Friday.

The judge instructed the jurors to return Monday to decide the second charge. It took them just a few hours to come up with the “not guilty” verdict. That they were deadlocked on the more serious charge but acquitted him so quickly on the lesser charge indicates that there was one holdout who realized he didn’t want to waste any more time in court.

Penny was facing 20 years in prison for the manslaughter charge before it was dropped on Friday.

The lesser charge of negligent homicide still carried a 15 year maximum sentence, if convicted.

CBS News reports that chaos erupted in the courtroom upon the reading of the not guilty verdict.

Neely’s father, who had abandoned him, had to be removed from the courtroom after standing up and shouting obscenities. He’s also now suing Penny civilly to use his homeless son’s death as a cash grab.

This comes as the latest blow to NYC District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who also unsuccessfully tried to prosecute former President Donald Trump.

Bragg has made a career of losing on “trumped up” charges.

The New York chapter of Black Lives Matter, run by Hawk Newsome had a completely predictable response: Calls for violence.

Meanwhile, some see this as signaling an end to the influence of the very group Newsome is part of.
