The man who President-elect Donald Trump has tapped to be his defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, believes he will be vindicated and confirmed by the Senate.
The former Fox News host spoke to another fellow Fox News host, Megyn Kelly, on her Sirius XM show where he said that there was an “arsenal of lies” against him.
“It is an arsenal of lies. They have mobilized to destroy me. I’ve had senators look me in the eye — friends — and say, “They are trying to kill you.” And, when I wake up, I think if Donald Trump can do this… you better believe I can do this…I told the truth, I took on the haters and the liars and the media,” he said.
“You’re going to get cross-examined by Democrats and potentially an FBI investigation — do you welcome an FBI investigation?” the host said, to which he responded, “I can’t wait for an FBI investigation. Can’t wait. How soon can they start?”
“That gives me an opportunity for them to do a real investigation. What the media is doing right now is a witch hunt. It’s trial by false accusations and lies. The FBI is going to look through what’s there, and if they do their job properly—which I fully expect they will—they’ll talk to everybody and get the full story and a full understanding. That’s a report I welcome. So yeah, we’re not hiding from that one bit,” the former “Fox & Friends Weekend” host said.
“Is there a point at which you do what Matt Gaetz did? You know, too much of a distraction, realizing, ‘I can’t get through; the Senators won’t do it.’ Is there a point like that?” Kelly asked.
“I mean, that’s the president’s call. What I know in this entire process is there’s only one man in America who got 76 million votes. One man that America voted for, for change in the Senate and in Washington, D.C. He asked me. I shook his hand, and I told him I’d fight like hell for him. If there’s a moment where he calls me and says, ‘Pete, attaboy, but you’re not the guy,’ I will salute and say, ‘Whatever assignment you need from me next, I’ll do it.’ It’s his call. He’s shown great confidence in me, and I respect his perspective on it no matter which way it goes,” the veteran said.
“Can we spend some time on what you would do in the job? The women in combat thing has made some headlines. I’ve said already that I agree with you on it for various reasons. There have been studies showing that troops perform more effectively when there is a separation. Women can be extremely effective in supportive roles around combat but maybe not on the front lines next to men. Is that a position you still hold?” the Sirius XM host said.
“I wrote a chapter on that in my book, which I would encourage people to read. I’m familiar with the studies you’re talking about because I’ve studied this issue. What I would say when I step back is that women are already in combat: female engagement teams, fighter pilots, EOD, military police—they play an indispensable role,” the Defense Secretary pick said.
“My real concern here is not about men or women. The women of the Pentagon and of our military are revered and appreciated, and I will be a Secretary of Defense for them like everybody else—their biggest advocate,” Hegseth continued.
“All I’ve ever really cared about is making sure the standards are maintained. Men or women, when we look at duty MOSs and jobs in the military, we should be properly assigning a threshold for capability that has nothing to do with gender and everything to do with what’s needed to do the job effectively,” he added.
“That means some jobs will be open to everyone. Flying drones is a very different capacity than carrying a rucksack with 100 pounds in it and” a heavy weapon, he noted further.
