Former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, is heading to Capitol Hill for meetings about her nomination to serve as director of national intelligence.

Gabbard’s past support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has been thrust into the spotlight ahead of the meetings after his regime collapsed over the weekend.

Gabbard visited Damascus in 2017 to meet with Assad. She has said he is not an enemy of the U.S.

Her first round of meetings on Monday include Sens. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.,, Mike Rounds, R-S.D., and James Lankford, R-Okla. She is expected to meet with more Senate Intelligence Committee Republican members this week.
