Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, on Monday released a statement expressing openness to confirming President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Pentagon after what she called “encouraging conversations.”

Ernst had come under intense scrutiny from Trump supporters online over her refusal to commit to supporting Hegseth, with multiple reports suggesting she wanted the post for herself. The former Fox News host has faced allegations of drinking on the job and sexual misconduct, which he denies.

“I appreciate Pete Hegseth’s responsiveness and respect for the process,” Ernst said in a statement obtained by Punchbowl News.

“Following our encouraging conversations, Pete committed to completing a full audit of the Pentagon and selecting a senior official who will uphold the roles and value of our servicemen and women – based on quality and standards, no quotas – and who will prioritize and strengthen my work to prevent sexual assault within the ranks,” she added.

She appeared to take a jab at her critics as well, saying “as I support Pete through this process, I look forward to a fair hearing based on truth, not anonymous sources.”
