A dictator’s ousting had the president-elect responding to the big picture as he spoke to the need for negotiations in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Following more than 24 years in power as the president of Syria, reports that Bashar al-Assad had fled Damascus came after rebels had overtaken the capital city in the wake of Aleppo and Homs. Early Sunday morning, after time spent meeting with world leaders in France as part of the reopening ceremony of Notre-Dame de Paris, President-elect Donald Trump called out Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “time to act.”
“The World is waiting!”
“Assad is gone. He has fled his country. His protector, Russia, Russia, Russia, led by Vladimir Putin, was not interested in protecting him any longer,” began Trump. “There was no reason for Russia to be there in the first place. They lost all interest in Syria because of Ukraine, where close to 600,000 Russian soldiers lay wounded or dead, in a war that should never have started, and could go on forever.”
“Russia and Iran are in a weakened state right now, one because of Ukraine and a bad economy, the other because of Israel and its fighting success,” he continued. “Likewise, [President Volodymyr] Zelenskyy and Ukraine would like to make a deal and stop the madness. They have ridiculously lost 400,000 soldiers, and many more civilians. There should be an immediate ceasefire and negotiations should begin.”
“Too many lives are being so needlessly wasted, too many families destroyed, and if it keeps going, it can turn into something much bigger, and far worse. I know Vladimir well. This is his time to act. China can help. The World is waiting!” asserted the president-elect.
Fox News had reported that, as of early Sunday, Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali had indicated he did not know where Assad was after the dictator had fled with his wife and three children.
It was further specified by NBC News that the primary group behind the overthrow was Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a designated terrorist organization per the United States and United Nations.
Earlier Saturday, Trump had reminded, “This is where former President Obama refused to honor his commitment of protecting the RED LINE IN THE SAND, and all hell broke out, with Russia stepping in. But now they are, like possibly Assad himself, being forced out, and it may actually be the best thing that can happen to them.”
“There was never much of a benefit in Syria for Russia, other than to make Obama look really stupid,” added the once and future commander-in-chief of his predecessors posturing over the movement of chemical weapons. “In any event, Syria is a mess, but is not our friend, & THE UNITED STATES SHOULD HAVE NOTING TO DO WITH IT. THIS IS NOT OUR FIGHT. LET IT PLAY OUT. DO NOT GET INVOLVED!”
Despite Trump’s position, President Joe Biden had issued a letter to Congress Friday regarding the War Powers Report detailing military operations in support of counterterrorism efforts. This included indicating that U.S. service members were “working by, with, and through local partners to conduct operations against ISIS forces in Iraq and Syria and against al-Qa’ida in Syria to limit the potential for resurgence of these groups and to mitigate threats to the United States homeland.”
Biden specified that he “directed United States forces to conduct discrete strikes on November 11, 2024, and on November 26, 2024, against facilities in Syria used by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and affiliated militia groups for headquarters and command and control, weapons storage, training, logistics support, and other purposes.”
Those strikes were said to have followed attacks against U.S. personnel and facilities in the country.
