Even I can’t believe that we’re having to fight this fight in 2024.
A Virginia pastor and real estate agent is facing the possibility of losing his realtor’s license because he posted a message in support of traditional marriage, real marriage, way back in 2015 when the Obergefell decision dropped.
Wilson Fauber, a Staunton, Virginia-based realtor with a career spanning four decades, appeared before the Virginia Association of Realtors on Wednesday in a hearing to determine whether he violated the National Association of Realtors’ Standard of Practice 10-5. Adopted in 2020, the standard declares that realtors ‘must not use harassing speech, hate speech, epithets, or slurs based on race, color, religion, sex disability, familial status, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity.’
Fauber is a Christian pastor who posted support for what the Bible has taught for 5,000 years, but he may be fired from his secular job in 2024 for making a statement in 2015 that violates a “hate speech” rule that wasn’t passed until 2020.
Fauber stirred the pot by sharing a post from Franklin Graham, philanthropist and evangelist son of Billy Graham, reacting to Obergefell’s legalization of “gay marriage.”
Fauber also shared Bible verses condemning homosexuality.
Fauber used his voice as a Christian pastor to share a Christian opinion on a public matter. Little did he know that thought crime would become illegal in just a few years.
Earlier this year, Fauber’s social media posts became the subject of a complaint lodged with the Virginia Association of Realtors over the purported violation of the National Association of Realtors’ Standard of Practice 10-5. Sylvester (Fauber’s attorney) expressed disappointment that the Virginia Association of Realtors did not dismiss the complaint as ‘frivolous’ but rather ‘issued a statement a few months afterward in April saying that if the allegations are true, then Wilson may have violated this new hate speech rule.’
‘Our position is that Wilson said nothing that constitutes hate speech. Instead, he comes from a heart of love and he serves everyone,’ Sylvester countered.
It sounds like the Virginia Association of Realtor’s doesn’t respect their employee’s right to free speech.
Unless they want to push the rainbow ideology. I somehow doubt that would trigger any type of inquisition.
Fauber ran for local office in Virginia this year and lost, and these posts were “resurfaced” during the campaign. So this is largely the result of liberals playing dirty politics and trying to get a Christian pastor fired from his job.
Fauber was subjected to an hours-long inquiry from the association which, if lost, means he would have to appeal the decision. If the decision stands it would make it difficult for Fauber to do business. It could cost him thousands of dollars in fines. And, more importantly, it would set a precedent for employers to police their employees’ personal opinions.
Sylvester expressed concern about the possibility of pastors who are also lawyers having ‘their sermons or their social media posts put under great scrutiny when they’re trying to act in the ministerial capacity’ if ‘their professional legal associations tried to constrain their speech.’ Insisting that ‘you could imagine the same thing about physicians’ who also serve as pastors, Sylvester identified Fauber’s case as ‘the tip of the iceberg.’
Tip of the iceberg indeed.
