President-elect Donald Trump said during an interview on NBC News’ “Meet the Press” Sunday that he is willing to work with Democrats to keep “Dreamers” in the U.S.
“I will work with the Democrats on a plan, and if we can come up with a plan, but the Democrats have made it very very difficult to do anything,” he told host Kristen Welker. “Republicans are very open to the Dreamers.”
He later added that a lot of Dreamers have good jobs or have started businesses and have become successful in the U.S.
Dreamers are undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children and have stayed in the U.S. for much of their lives.
Trump said he does want many of the Dreamers to be able to stay in the U.S., according to CNN.
A big issue in Trump’s 2024 campaign was immigration, specifically his plan for mass deportations of migrants who have come to the U.S. illegally and weren’t vetted.
Trump has also said he plans to end birthright citizenship.
