Outgoing Democratic National Committee (DNC) chairman Jaime Harrison said that his party shouldn’t back down an inch when it comes to the exclusionary racist politics that it has embraced even after a disastrous election.
Harrison, who is black, defended identity politics during a Thursday meeting with state Democrat chairs on Thursday, urging them to defy naysayers who have dared to point out that discrimination is a dead end, as the party found out on November 5 when Donald J. Trump was overwhelmingly elected over Kamala Harris, a champion as well as a beneficiary of DEI.
“When I wake up in the morning, when I look in the mirror, when I step out the door, I can’t rub this off,” he said, gesturing at his face. “This is who I am. This is how the world perceives me.”
“That is my identity,” Harrison continued, according to the Associated Press. “And it is not politics. It is my life. And the people that I need in the party, that I need to stand up for me, have to recognize that. You cannot run away from that.”
Harrison’s four-year term ends in February, he won’t be seeking reelection as the party seeks to recover from its rejection by voters, many of whom were turned off by the Democrats’ focus on the race and gender politics that he insists should remain a part of its messaging.
The outgoing DNC boss has previously suggested that he’s anxious to air his grievances, saying that “the muzzle comes off” the day after his replacement is elected on February 1, 2025.
“That’s it for you all,” Harrison told the party chairs. “Because I’m saving the rest for my book. And I am naming names.”
He doesn’t plan on endorsing a successor, according to AP.
Some of the names who could assume the position include Minnesota state party chair Ken Martin, his Wisconsin counterpart Ben Wikler, New York state Sen. James Skoufis, and former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley. As Joe Biden’s now former SSA Commissioner, O’Malley just guaranteed tens of thousands of government loafers the ability to continue to work from home through Trump’s term.
Former Illinois Gov. Rahm Emanuel’s name has also been mentioned, although the party’s ideological thought leader is vehemently opposed.
There is a disease in Washington of Democrats who spend more time listening to the donor class than working people.
If you want to know the seed of the party’s political crisis, that’s it.
The DNC needs an organizer who gets people. Not someone who sends fish heads in the mail https://t.co/32LueUrsG8

The continuing prominence of AOC – who is already being mentioned as the party’s 2028 candidate – shows that the Democrats aren’t going to willingly change course.
Like Cortez burning his ships after reaching the new world, there’s no going back from identity politics for the Democratic Party.
