The sales pitch for “worst Press Secretary in history” included a doozy of a claim about approval of Hunter Biden’s pardon as the clock continued to run down on the Biden administration.

From the earnest distaste of nepotism to having to deal with the ramifications of the move, President Joe Biden’s decision to issue a decade-spanning blanket pardon of his son had irked Democrats as well as Republicans. Of course, those who listen to White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre wouldn’t know that as her ongoing defense for the clemency she claimed would never come had her turning a poll on its head.

During Friday’s White House press briefing, the spokeswoman was questioned as to why the public should have any confidence in statements coming from the federal government after insistence that Biden wouldn’t write his son a “Get Out of Jail Free” card proved false.

“I think the American people understand, and I think they understand how difficult this decision would be. And I would actually add, and I think it’s important to note here as you’re asking me these questions — important questions to ask — that there was a poll, a U.S. Gov poll, that came out, that some of you all reported on it, and it said 64% of the American people agreed with the pardon,” claimed Jean-Pierre.

“This is a psychotic level of lying,” contended RedState’s Bonchie in sharing the moment. “The kind of thing someone used to get shamed from polite society over. Of course, she’ll be on MSNBC by next year.”

While she would later reference the poll again saying, “I called out the U.S. Gov poll where 64% of Americans, that’s not a small number, agree with the president’s decision to pardon his son,” Jean-Pierre was actually citing the findings of a YouGov poll released on Dec. 2 that showed more than completely the opposite.

According to their survey of nearly 3,600 adults, only 34% approved of the pardon while the remaining 66% were either against or unsure about the decision, out of which 15% somewhat disapproved and 35% strongly disapproved.

A look at the breakdown of the data revealed that the press secretary’s was likely speaking to the percent of voters who identified as Democrats who agreed with the pardon, as 37% strongly approved and 27% somewhat approved to produce the 64% figure.

“My gosh she literally got a poll backwards from the White House podium,” said GOP communicator Matt Whitlock. “She genuinely might be the worst Press Secretary in history.”

Ahead of her claim, Jean-Pierre had defended the pardon, insisting, “I just laid out the president’s thinking. The president laid it out himself in his own words. He did. He laid out how he wrestled with the specifics.”

“I know what I said. I know what the president said. That is where we were at the time. That is where the president was at the time — I am his spokesperson,” she went on about the repeated claims the pardon wasn’t going to happen. “This weekend, he thought about it, he wrestled with it — he wrestled with it and made this decision. That’s what I can tell the American people.”

Prior to her stint at the podium in the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room, Jean-Pierre had already acted as a political analyst for NBC News and the ratings-fraught MSNBC. And while there was a considerable possibility that she would return to a similar capacity, there remains more than six weeks until the Biden administration comes to a close, which for many is far too long a wait.
