The Hispanic community in the United States is one of the most influential and economically promising groups. However, it is often portrayed in the media as a victim of discriminatory policies, when in reality, many hispanics have been impacted by ineffective economic and immigration policies.

In a recent interview on the Gateway Hispanic Podcast, Bob Unanue, CEO of Goya Foods, shared his perspective on hispanic prosperity, the impact of President Donald Trump’s policies, and how the private sector and government can work together to create a prosperous future for hispanics.

Unanue, who has been a close advisor to Trump on Hispanic prosperity, provided a clear view of the challenges and opportunities Latinos face in the United States.

Throughout the conversation, he emphasized the importance of a conservative approach that focuses on core values such as God, family, and work.

The hispanic reality: More than victims

On traditional media channels like Univisión and Telemundo, Hispanics are often portrayed as victims of an oppressive system. However, Unanue strongly disagrees with this narrative. “This country opens its doors to us, gives us all the opportunities, even those we don’t have in our own country, to succeed,” he stated.

For him, the problem lies in the policies implemented in recent years, particularly under the Biden administration, which has led to increased insecurity and a deteriorating economy.

Unanue points out that during the Trump administration, the economic situation was different. “Many Latinos voted for Trump, and in that vote, they reflected the hope that the prosperity policies of the Republican administration would bring more economic stability,” he explained.

Through more conservative policies, Trump was able to foster an environment of economic growth and security for Latinos, in stark contrast to what has happened under the current administration.

Human trafficking: A silenced crisis

One of the most sensitive issues Unanue addressed was human trafficking, particularly sexual trafficking and the exploitation of women and children.

According to Unanue, this issue has intensified in recent years, especially with the increase in illegal migration across the southern border of the United States. Human trafficking has become a multimillion-dollar industry, and Hispanics are the primary victims.

70% of trafficking victims are women, and 25% are children. This is something we must urgently address,” Unanue remarked, also supporting the movie Sound of Freedom, which exposes the child trafficking problem.

For Unanue, one of the key ways to combat this scourge is to close the borders and ensure that immigrants enter the country legally and in a controlled manner.

Ilegal immigration is fueling human trafficking and sexual exploitation. The U.S. government needs to close the border and regulate entries more strictly,” he emphasized. He also noted that the Trump administration was more effective in this regard, with initiatives like strengthening border security and collaborating with international organizations to combat human trafficking.

The entrepreneurial hispanic spirit

Unanue highlighted that one of the greatest contributions of the Latino community to the U.S. economy is the creation of businesses. “36% of new businesses in the U.S. are Latino-owned. We come together through language and values, not external circumstances,” he explained.

This entrepreneurial spirit reflects the values that, according to Unanue, define Latinos: God, family, and work.

Despite the challenges they face, Latinos have shown remarkable resilience and ability to rise and thrive without waiting for government help. “We don’t come to this country to ask, we come to contribute,” he added, referring to the legacy of his own family, which founded Goya Foods in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War.

This philosophy, of working to achieve success, is one of the keys to the economic progress of hispanic people.

The need for private sector and government collaboration

In his remarks, Unanue stressed that to continue advancing, the private sector and government must collaborate effectively. He pointed out that the government should facilitate the creation of small businesses and eliminate bureaucratic obstacles that hinder entrepreneurs.

“There’s good news: Latino small businesses are growing, and if the government helps create an environment conducive to these businesses, prosperity will be even greater,” he stated.

However, he also highlighted that much of the success of Latinos depends on their own efforts. In his view, Hispanics don’t expect the government to solve their problems, but instead rise every day with the purpose of working and contributing to society. This mindset, according to Unanue, has been key to the success of Goya Foods and other Latino-owned businesses in the U.S.

A call to action

Unanue’s analysis is clear: the Hispanic community has immense potential, but it needs policies that favor work, legality, and economic prosperity. Uncontrolled immigration policies and victimization narratives only harm hipanics and place them in vulnerable situations.

By strengthening traditional values and adopting a conservative approach, Hispanics can continue to thrive in the United States, as they have historically done.

It’s crucial for Hispanics to face the reality that true prosperity doesn’t come through government dependency but through hard work, entrepreneurship, and collaboration between the private sector and the government.

The future of the Hispanic community lies not in being victims of an oppressive system, but in seizing the opportunities offered by a country that, though imperfect, remains the best place to achieve the American dream based on freedom, family, and work.
