Things in Syria are getting downright interesting, with opposition fighters closing in on Damascus. Intriguing though this might be, and great as it would be to see some semblance of sanity return to Syria with the ouster of President Bashar al-Assad, it’s not America’s fight.

The incoming president’s post reads in full:
Opposition fighters in Syria, in an unprecedented move, have totally taken over numerous cities, in a highly coordinated offensive, and are now on the outskirts of Damascus, obviously preparing to make a very big move toward taking out Assad. Russia, because they are so tied up in Ukraine, and with the loss there of over 600,000 soldiers, seems incapable of stopping this literal march through Syria, a country they have protected for years. This is where former President Obama refused to honor his commitment of protecting the RED LINE IN THE SAND, and all hell broke out, with Russia stepping in. But now they are, like possibly Assad himself, being forced out, and it may actually be the best thing that can happen to them. There was never much of a benefit in Syria for Russia, other than to make Obama look really stupid. In any event, Syria is a mess, but is not our friend, & THE UNITED STATES SHOULD HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. THIS IS NOT OUR FIGHT. LET IT PLAY OUT. DO NOT GET INVOLVED!

The once and future president makes a good point. There’s no compelling U.S. interest in Syria. We don’t have any dogs in that fight. Any American forces, military and otherwise, should be withdrawn from that mess forthwith. Syria isn’t worth one American soldier wounded or killed in action, and we should realize that. Especially when it’s Syria that’s being fought over. Syria has been in turmoil through much of its history, but as of the last few days, this latest crisis appears to be coming to a head.

It’s something of an understatement, as well, to point out that our military is sadly unprepared and overextended. While it’s true that we shouldn’t be involved unless there is a compelling American interest at stake, our military should be trained and equipped to the point where, when we do deploy, whomever our enemy might be soils their britches in sheer terror from the moment the first American soldier steps off the plane. We’re not there right now.

Add to that the fact that this part of the world has been unstable for 2,000 years. It is unstable today. It will be unstable tomorrow. It may well be unstable for another 2,000 years.
It looks like the opposition may not need our help in any case.
