Peak Design’s 20L Everyday Backpack was the most identifiable feature of the man who shot UnitedHealthcare’s CEO … and it was dumped in Central Park.
Investigators have yet to officially confirm the origin of the bag and are taking it to be forensically tested in a lab in Queens, the source said.
The bag was found in a second sweep of the park Friday evening, between some boulders just south of the park’s carousel, the source said.
Police secured the area, bagged the piece of evidence and sent it — unopened — to the lab, the source said. It will not be opened until it reaches the lab.
While I’m glad they found the backpack, I kinda wish they had, you know, a bit more of a lead.
Let’s consider the facts:
-
The assassin took a bus from Atlanta to NYC and used a fake ID while (mostly) hiding his face from cameras.
-
He knew which hotel Brian Thompson was staying at for the company’s investor meeting.
-
He waited outside all night – maybe for multiple days – for Thompson to appear.
-
He used a suppressed pistol for the kill and calmly walked away with a clear exit plan – one so effective that he disappeared into the middle of the biggest city in America while everyone was tweeting about him.
-
A burner phone was recovered by police.
If there’s not something in that backpack to trace him, I wonder how hard this case is going to be to crack.
Especially since he’s likely no longer in NYC…
