A Connecticut appeals court on Friday upheld the bulk of a $1.3 billion defamation judgment against Alex Jones for his role in spreading misinformation about the Sandy Hook school shooting.

Jones was ordered by a jury in 2022 to pay a total of $1.5 billion in damages and lawyer fees to the family members of victims of the elementary school shooting, where 20 children and six staff members were fatally shot in 2012. The family members sued Jones because they had been harassed and threatened since the shooting.

The former Infowars host previously claimed that the shooting was a hoax created by the federal government, which had hired actors to play grieving parents. But he has since admitted that the shooting was real.

The Appeals court said the jury’s verdict was not unreasonable due to the mental anguish the family members suffered because of Jones’ lies, according to Reuters.

The court did find fault with one portion of the verdict, and dismissed $150 million in damages that were filed under a state unfair trade practices law that did not properly apply to the facts of the case.

Alinor Sterling, an attorney for the families, praised the court’s ruling in a statement.

“The jury’s $965 million rebuke of Jones will stand, and the families who have fought valiantly for years have brought Alex Jones yet another step closer to true justice,” Sterling said.

An attorney for Jones said they will appeal the verdict to the Connecticut Supreme Court.
