Democratic California Rep. Adam Schiff, who was recently elected to the Senate, announced Friday that he will resign his post in the House on Sunday and be sworn into the upper chamber on Monday.
Schiff defeated Republican Steve Garvey for the seat last month, and will serve in the seat that was previously held by the late Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein. Democratic Sen. Laphonza Butler served the remainder of Feinstein’s term.
The incoming senator made the announcement in a video on X, after he cast his last vote on the House floor, and confirmed the swearing-in date to the Washington Examiner.
“To my LA constituents — thank you for the amazing opportunity to serve,” Schiff said. “And to the people of the whole state of CA, I’m so grateful for your confidence and look forward to all we can get done together!”
Schiff also expressed optimism at finding “common ground” in the Senate, with both Republicans and Democrats. Republicans will control the upper chamber starting next month.
New Jersey’s Democratic Rep. Andy Kim will also resign from the House on Sunday, and be sworn in on Monday, per the Examiner. The ceremonies will take place just under one month before the 119th Congress begins in January.
