New York City Mayor Eric Adams says he would work with Trump’s Border Czar, Tom Homan, to deport illegal immigrants who commit crimes in the Big Apple.
Adam’s remarks came within weeks of him promising to expand the NYPD using money previously allocated for illegal immigrants due to reduced arrivals.
The New York Times reports that NYC hosts about 58,000 convicted illegal immigrants, including over 1,000 suspected or confirmed violent gang members.
“Those who are here committing crimes, robberies, shooting at police officers, r*ping innocent people have been a harm to our country,” Adams said.
“I want to sit down and hear the plan on how we’re going to address them. I would love to sit down with the border czar and hear his thoughts on how we’re going to address those who are harming our citizens.”
When asked if he thinks the city should, in “some circumstances,” cooperate with the Trump administration in deporting illegal immigrants, Mayor Adams referred the journalist to Obama and Hillary Clinton’s stance on the issue.
A recently resurfaced video shows Hillary recommending a blanket deportation for illegal immigrants with a criminal record.
“If They’ve Committed a Crime, Deport Them,” she says.
Acknowledging that supporting the deportation of immigrants with a criminal record would cause a backlash in his party, the NYC mayor dared the Left to “Cancel” him.
“Cancel me, I don’t care.”
In June, a Venezuelan illegal immigrant shot two NYPD officers barely a month after a judge dropped his immigration case.
“You got a guy, he’s on camera shooting at a police officer. I don’t want that guy in my city, plain and simple,” Adams said.
In November 2024, a Honduran illegal immigrant was arrested for raping a 5-year-old girl in New York after skipping his immigration hearings. In Virginia, another illegal immigration haven, an undocumented immigrant with an extensive rap sheet, including sexual assault, was arrested for attempted rape within days of his release.
“You got a guy that rapes one young lady, gets out, and go rape another person. I don’t want them in the city,” Adams continued.
Adams also acknowledged that Americans want secure borders and communities and made their voices heard by voting for Trump in large numbers.
“We cannot ignore the fact that the American people have communicated to us loudly and clearly that we have a broken system and they want it fixed,” he said.
The NYC mayor has also acknowledged that the city was hemorrhaging money as a result of the illegal immigration crisis, having spent $6.4 billion to feed and shelter asylum seekers in luxury hotels.
Adams also declared a truce, promising to work with the Trump administration.
“I made it clear that I’m not going to be warring with this administration. I’m going to be working with this administration,” he said.
Despite Mayor Adams’ truce, New York City remains a sanctuary for illegal immigrants. The Mayor de-Blasio-era sanctuary ordinance bars city officials from cooperating with the ICE in deporting immigrants.
However, Adams has called for the repeal of the sanctuary ordinance. Council members Robert Holden (D-Queens) and Joe Borelli (R-Staten Island) have also filed a bipartisan motion to repeal the sanctuary status.
Nonetheless, proponents of unchecked immigration request more funds to protect illegal immigrants from deportation. Democratic Assemblywoman for the 39th Assembly District Catalina Cruz, a Colombian immigrant, wants NYC to allocate over $150 million to provide legal assistance for illegal immigrants likely to be deported under the Trump administration.
