Hunterdon County Sheriff Fred Brown’s office said on Wednesday that recent drone sightings in the county and across the state of New Jersey remain part of an ongoing FBI investigation.

The sightings have raised enough concerns to prompt Hunterdon County Commissioner John Lanza, the liaison to the Sheriff’s Office and Department of Public Safety, to request a public update on the situation.

“There have been reports of single drones hovering over people’s houses for hours at a time. Other reports say the drones are often clustered together in groups as big as eight. Drones are considered aircraft. Aircraft and airspace are strictly regulated by the FAA,” said Lanza.

The sheriff’s office reminded residents that “unauthorized drone operations can pose significant risks to public safety, privacy, and national security.” 

The sheriff’s office urged residents “not approach any downed drones that might result from mechanical failure but to instead immediately alert authorities.”
