Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Defense, and his mother will sit down for an interview with Fox News.
Hegseth, now a former Fox News host, has been hit with claims of alcohol abuse and sexual misconduct since being tapped by Trump to head up the DOD and an email his mother, Penelope Hegseth, sent to her son during a contentious divorce from his second wife, Samantha Hegseth, was leaked to the New York Times despite her objections. Hegseth’s mother was quick to regret the email chastising him for his poor treatment of not only his ex, but women in general, saying in a follow-up email that it was sent in “anger.” She blasted the Times for the “disgusting” decision to publish the email.
The media-generated controversy has resulted in the Hegseth nomination being “in serious trouble,” according to Kaitlan Collins, host of CNN’s The Source. Collins, who was just named chief White House correspondent for the network, reported Tuesday evening that Hegseth would be sitting down “likely tomorrow, for an interview with Fox News.”
“That’s noteworthy given most, if not all, of Trump’s Cabinet picks have been told not to do any media appearances until after they’ve been confirmed,” she said. “It’s also notable because Fox News was his employer until just a few days ago. And just a few moments ago, I was told his mother is also expected to appear on the channel for an interview that comes after she was inserted into his confirmation drama when the New York Times published an email from [her].”
Citing a source familiar with scheduling, Mediaite reported that Penelope Hegseth “will sit down for an exclusive interview with Fox & Friends host Steve Doocy.” That interview will take place Wednesday morning, according to the outlet.
Penelope Hegseth spoke with the Times over the phone and said of her depiction of her son’s character and behavior, “It is not true. It has never been true. I know my son. He is a good father, husband.”
In running with the story, the newspaper lifted its paywall to ensure maximum exposure.
Collins also claimed that part of the “Trump strategy to save Pete Hegseth” was for him to sit down with House Republicans, even though they do not vote for cabinet nominations, saying that the strategy “has raised some eyebrows.” Hegseth is currently on Capitol Hill meeting with Republican Senators.
