The final House race was called Tuesday night, with California GOP Rep. John Duarte losing to Democratic challenger Adam Gray, leaving Republicans with 220 seats, compared to 115 for Democrats, in the Congress’s lower chamber.
Gray won the seat in the state’s 13th congressional district, in a rematch of his 2022 contest with Duarte, by less than 200 votes, according to The Associated Press.
House Speaker Mike Johnson will begin the next congressional session, starting in January, with the narrowest of majorities.
Though the Louisiana Republican has a five-seat majority, several of those seats will be vacant – including the one formerly occupied by Matt Gaetz, the Florida congressman who recently resigned – until special elections in the coming months.
