Catching the early flight from Minneapolis to Washington, D.C. on Thanksgiving, we found a group of players from the Minnesota State–Mankato Mavericks women’s hockey team waiting for their teammates at the entrance to the G Concourse. We were sitting at the coffee shop off to the side. “There’s the Gophers women’s hockey team,” my wife said to me. Close, but not quite.

The ladies looked happy hanging out together. They smiled and laughed among themselves. This was at 5:45 a.m. or so. The word that kept coming to my mind was fellowship. They have it.

I asked them where they were headed. They told me they were on their way to Dartmouth for the weekend. That struck me as a happy coincidence. I asked them if I could have my wife snap a picture of me with them. They all obliged. I told them before we parted that they are great representatives of the university.

I asked them how their season was going. They told me it was going well — that they had just beaten Ohio State (which also made me think they were the Gophers team). After this weekend the Mavericks are 6-7-1, 2-7-1 WCHA.

The Dartmouth ladies were 0-10 when the Mavericks came to town. They were 0-12 when the Mavericks left. The Mavericks won Friday’s game 4-0. They also pulled out Saturday’s game 3-2 in overtime.

An attorney acquaintance stopped me on the street back at home this afternoon to say hello. He mentioned he had read my Thanksgiving post about the team. He wanted to pass it on to a friend who must be an alum. The encounter reminded me of my intention to add this update.
