President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday night announced that he had a “productive conversation” with Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo on the illegal flow of fentanyl into the United States and illegal immigration.
Trump made border security one of his biggest priorities during his presidential campaign, and promised to crack down on illegal immigration if he was elected back to the White House.
The former president on Tuesday pledged to impose a 25% tariff Mexico and Canada, and a 10% tariff on China over illegal immigration and fentanyl. He also vowed to impose the tariffs on his first day in office this January.
Pardo previously criticized Trump over his threat to impose the tariffs on goods imported from the neighboring country, stating that drugs were a problem for the U.S., and that a tariff would be placed on the U.S. in response, The Hill reported.
The former president did not go into details about the conversation on Wednesday, but said they discussed what could be done to stem the flow of fentanyl, and end migration through Mexico.
“Just had a wonderful conversation with the new President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo,” he posted on Truth Social. “She has agreed to stop Migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing our Southern Border.
“We also talked about what can be done to stop the massive drug inflow into the United States, and also, U.S. consumption of these drugs. It was a very productive conversation,” he added.
Trump previously said that he spoke with Chinese leaders on ending their part in the illegal flow of fentanyl, but claimed that they have failed to hold up their end of the deal, despite promising to impose the maximum penalty on anyone caught helping to send fentanyl into the country.
The former president is scheduled to be sworn into office on January 20.
