Isn’t California, you know, broke? Well, look, so they are. But that isn’t stopping Gavin Newsom’s profligacy, as the impeccably coiffed governor of the once-Golden state seems to operate on the principle “We can’t be broke; we still have some checks left!”

Some of those checks, it seems, are destined to go to electric vehicle buyers to replace the federal subsidies that President-elect Trump (never will get tired of that) is threatening to eliminate on day one. We are left wondering if those California checks won’t end up being made of rubber.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said the state will provide rebates to residents if President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming administration does away with a federal tax credit for electric vehicles.

In a news release issued Monday, Newsom said he would restart the state’s Clean Vehicle Rebate Program, which provided financial incentives on more than 590,000 vehicles before it was phased out late 2023.

“We will intervene if the Trump Administration eliminates the federal tax credit, doubling down on our commitment to clean air and green jobs in California,” Newsom said. “We’re not turning back on a clean transportation future — we’re going to make it more affordable for people to drive vehicles that don’t pollute.”

Uh, Mr. Impeccably Coiffed Governor, those vehicles do pollute — they just shift the pollution to a different source. Of course, California did, at one time, have clean, emissions-free power — nuclear — but what happened to those? Oh, yes, they are shut down, except for the Diablo Canyon plant — scheduled to go offline in 2030.

And how much will this cost the beleaguered taxpayers of California? Well, the once-Golden State has already poured a billion and a half taxpayer dollars into “Clean Vehicle Rebates.”

You have to hand it to Gavin Newsom; there is no tax too high, no fee too onerous, no spending too profligate that he won’t embrace it to the gubernatorial bosom.

This isn’t the only thing that Governor Newsom intends to defy the Trump administration on.

Newsom also announced earlier this month that he will convene a special session in December “to protect California values,” including fundamental civil rights and reproductive rights, that he said “are under attack by this incoming administration.”

“Whether it be our fundamental civil rights, reproductive freedom, or climate action — we refuse to turn back the clock and allow our values and laws to be attacked,” Newsom said on X on Nov. 7.

It is unclear whether or not this statement was issued from a table at the French Laundry.

California’s Governor and, likely, a majority of the Democrat-dominated state legislature clearly intends to keep spending until they run out of checks. The question becomes, what happens then? States, unlike the federal government, can’t just fire up the printing presses when they need more money. It’s a safe bet that California’s Democrats will run to Washington with their hands out, looking for a bailout, but it’s more than likely such a request will get short shrift in the next four years.

But Gavin Newsom intends to keep spending. Also, keep this in mind: This guy will almost certainly run for President in 2028.
