President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden hosted what some in the media billed as a “final farewell dinner” Friday evening at the White House, and while Vice President Kamala Harris was conspicuously absent, tears from the 81-year-old president were not.
Biden was overcome with emotion as wife Jill spoke to supporters and donors attending the party held on the South Lawn, hailing the president as her “husband and hero” while praising his decades of service.
“What I’ve watched you do for more than 40 years is extraordinary… Joe what you’ve done the last four years is breathtaking,” Mrs. Biden said, evoking tears from the president.
Raising a glass as Biden wiped his eyes with a tissue, the first lady said, “My husband and hero, Joe Biden.”
“Joe and I are hosting this dinner tonight for a very simple reason to say thank you. Thank you to so many dear friends,” Jill added.
President Biden slurred his way through brief remarks, celebrating his belief that he left the country in better shape as he bowed out to the man he replaced in 2020, President-elect Donald Trump.

“We began this journey to redeem the soul of the nation and define the light in the darkness. And I never could have gotten to where the White House has become without you and we never could have gotten as much done as we did without you. And that’s not hyperbole. I mean it from the bottom of my heart,” he said.
“One thing I’ve always believed about public service and especially the presidency, is the importance of asking ourselves, have we left the country in better shape than we found it? I can say with all my heart, the answer to that question is a resounding yes because of you,” he said. “I believe we can be proud we’re leaving America in a better place today than when we came into office four years ago.”
As seen below, there was talk that some major donors were “notably absent” and that insiders were calling the black-tie dinner “the losers’ party.”

And while Kamala was not on hand, her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) was present for the festivities.
Here’s a quick sampling of responses to the story, as seen on X:
Donors bailed, Biden cracked jokes – sinking ship or pool?

Biden’s last event: a pool party without splashers.
It seems like some donors are swimming away from the “last hurrah” to avoid the political undertow.
